GETTING STARTED SAVING GAS

The most important thing you can do to save gas is to ensure that you have a properly maintained vehicle utilizing your owners manual to establish a schedule. By starting with making sure your car is in tip top shape you can establish a base line average to gauge the results of any other efforts to increase your cars fuel economy. If you take good care of your car it will take good care of you . Here are a few key items to keep an eye on .

Did you realize that an estimated 60% of the cars on the road have dirty air filters? This is the #1 fuel robber out there. 10-15% depending on when it was last changed.

Replace your oil every 3000 miles and use synthetic blends . It is more expensive but you will save 5-10% in mileage verses regular motor oil .

Check your PCV valve - a PCV valve regulates crank case ventilation and effects the vacume system... with time it can get gummed up with oil . Either clean with carburetor cleaner to un stick or replace. This will reduce that oily build up on the valves and allow the crankcase gases to be burned .

Check your vacuum lines for leaks and cracks

Check for proper belt tightness.

Inspect spark plugs for oil fouling and abnormal burn and gap .

Inspect electrical components for wear deterioration and tracking

Replace oxygen sensors and catalytic converters on older vehicles. Usually at 60,000 miles.

Check alignment- You will know that your car is need of an wheel alignment if you notice your vehicle constantly wandering or pulling from one side .

Check proper tire pressure or abnormal wear.

Use a fuel injector cleaner additive once a month to ensure a clean fuel system .

Wash your car. A clean car is a happy car and believe it or not actually get's slightly better mileage than a dirty one.
